Orange Shirt Day

September 29, 2026

September 30th is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, also known as Orange Shirt Day. It's a day to remember and honour the children, the families, and the communities affected by the residential school system.

We are all treaty people, and as a settler in Treaty One territory, working on truth and reconciliation is very important to me.

Since being elected last year, I have been working to understand the role of municipal leaders in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's 94 Calls to Action. I have proactively met with the City's Indigenous Relations Division to better understand their role, their needs, and their challenges. I attended events where Indigenous expertise and perspectives were featured, met with local Indigenous-led non-profits, and shared events and programs with an Indigenous perspective through my councillor newsletter. In June 2026, I was honoured to become a partner in the Winnipeg Indigenous Accord.

In my personal life, I'm committed to deepening my learning about Indigenous peoples' lives and experiences. I do that by reading books by Indigenous authors; listening to podcasts about the residential school system, the 60s Scoop, and MMIWG2S+; supporting Indigenous businesses; and talking with my children and family members about truth and reconciliation.

Our team will take a pause from all campaign activities tomorrow, September 30th, to observe National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. There are lots of different Orange Shirt Day events happening throughout the city; you can see a list of them on my councillor website. I hope you will join me in attending a special event or setting aside time to learn and reflect on the Day.
